Asia: found in China, Tibet, Nepal
South Asia: India, Eastern and Western Himalayas, Bhutan
Southeast Asia: Indochina, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Malay Peninsula, Indonesia, Greater Sundas
Taxonomy
Subspecies
Ten subspecies are recognized[1]:
- H. e. hodgsoni: North East India to eastern Nepal and Bhutan
- H. e. erythrocephalus: East Himalayas of Myanmar and north-western Thailand
- H. e. helenae: South China (western Yunnan) and northern Myanmar
- H. e. yamakanensis: South East China (Sichuan, Fujian and northern Guangdong)
- H. e. intermedius: North Laos, northern Vietnam and southern China (Yunnan)
- H. e. annamensis: East Thailand, southern Laos and Vietnam
- H. e. klossi: Banthat Mountains (western Cambodia and extreme south-western Thailand)
- H. e. chaseni Malay Peninsula
- H. e. hainanus: Hainan Island (s China)
- H. e. flagrans: Mountains of Sumatra
Habitat
Dense broadleafed lower and upper montane forests. Occupying the middle storey and lower canopy.
Behaviour
Diet
They eat a variety of insects, such as cicadas, millipedes, centipedes, flies, stick insects, beetles and woodlice. The also eat leaves and berries.
