Identification
11 cm (4¼ in)
- Chestnut upperparts
- White supercilium
- White wingbar (two wingbars according to some sources)
- Outer primaries edged white giving white edge to folded wing
- Streaky-grey underparts
- Juvenile darker and lacking the wingbars
Similar species
Found at higher elevation than Gray-breasted Wood-Wren which it is most similar to; the wing bars found in the adult are specific when present.
Distribution
South America: found in the Andes of northern Peru and immediately adjacent Ecuador
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
More closely related to White-breasted Wood-Wren than Gray-breasted Wood-Wren contrary to what should be assumed from plumage.
Habitat
East slope of Andes (~7000 feet). Disturbed roadside, tropical humid montane forest.
Behaviour
Territorial, mostly found near the forest floor.
Diet
Their diet appears to consist almost entirely of invertebrates.
