Hylocitrea bonensis

Identification

14 - 15cm.

  • Greenish-olive head
  • Dark olive-brown crown
  • Brighter ear-coverts, duskier lores
  • Brownish slate-grey upperparts, wing washed olive
  • Brownish slate-grey tail and upperwing
  • Underparts also brownish slate-grey, a bit lighter than back
  • Brownish-cinnamon undertail-coverts
  • Bonthaina has more yellow flanks

Female like male but with cinnamon-buff throat with grey streaking and yellowish-olive crown

Similar species

May be confused with female Maroon-backed Whistler.

Distribution

Endemic to Sulawesi (Indonesia).
Moderately common at higher elevations. Restricted-range species.

Taxonomy

Two subspecies accepted:

  • H. b. bonensis in the mountains of north, central and southeast Sulawesi
  • H. b. bonthaina on Mount Lompobattang in southwest Sulawesi

Sometimes placed in genus Pachycephala.

Habitat

Moist montanes, mainly at 2000 - 3500m.

Behaviour

Has been seen feeding on berries and some arthropods, but little known. Forages in middle storey and understorey.
No information about breeding.
Probably a sedentary species.
