25–27 cm (10-10½ in)

  • Greyish overall plumage
  • Blackish crest is loose and pointed
  • Yellowish-brown eyes
  • Pink legs
  • Pinkish-orange bill

Juvenile

  • Pale brown
  • Blackish bill

Distribution

Maccabe forest of south-western Mauritius Island (western Mascarene Islands)

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Humid forest.

Behaviour

Diet

Their diet consists of insects, seeds, and fruits and occasionally flowers and nectar.

Breeding

They nest from November to February. The clutch consists of 2 pinkish eggs which are laid in a nest consisting of straw and roots. The incubation lasts between 14 and 16 days.
