Identification

12.5cm. A distinctive Manakin.

Male

  • Red patch on forehead
  • Red lower back to uppertail-coverts
  • Black rest of upperparts including most of wings (rest of wings olive)
  • Black tail with central feather pair elongated and pointed
  • Pale greyish rear part of head, paler underparts
  • Some blackish streaks on flanks

  • Olive upperparts
  • Grey face and throat
  • Light greyish-olive underparts

Juveniles resemble females.

Distribution

South America: found only in south-eastern Brazil (Espírito Santo to Paraná and eastern Santa Catarina).
Uncommon to locally fairly common.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Atlantic forest.
Occurs up to 1200m.

Behaviour

Feeds on small fruits and insects. Plucks or snatches food in aerial sally.
Regularly accompanies mixed-species flocks.
Little information about breeding. Breeding season probably November to February. The male dispalys solitarily in a small arena. The nest is a shallow basket, placed 4m above the ground.
A resident species.
