Identification

20–21 cm (8-8¼ in)

  • Glossy blue-black
  • Erect crest
  • White wing band
  • Dark red/red brown iris

Distribution

South America: found in South-central and south-eastern Brazil to Uruguay and north-eastern Paraguay.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species1.

Habitat

Grassy highlands, open areas with shrubs.

Diet

Their main diet consists of insects with the addition of some fruit on occasion.
