Costa Rica to western Panama in Central America, and separate from that in the Andes from Colombia and Venezuela to Bolivia and just into Argentina

Formerly considered conspecific with Mexican Violetear under the name Green Violetear.

Relatively wide options from humid forest and second-growth to coffee plantations and open hillsides with bushes.
