Identification

15–16 cm (6-6¼ in)

  • Crest
  • Yellowish iris

Male

  • Black crown
  • Black overall plumage with narrow white barring
  • Black-streaked white throat

Distribution

South America: found in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 3 subspecies[1]

  • T. t. tenuepunctatus:
  • Eastern slope of Eastern Andes of north-central Colombia
  • T. t. tenuifasciatus:
  • Eastern slope of south-central Colombia (Putumayo) and eastern Ecuador
  • T. t. berlepschi:
  • Eastern slope of south-eastern Ecuador (southern Zamora-Chinchipe) and north-eastern Peru

Habitat

humid evergreen-forest edge; also shrubby, regenerating plantations, hotel grounds with submontane rainforest. Observed at heights around 920m.

Behaviour

Diet

They forage singly or in pairs in dense thickets. Little information is available about their diet but they are known to eat insects and arthropods.
