Identification
- Green upper wings, yellow underwings
- Red head and body
- Blue legs, belly, nape and mantle
- Black cap
- Greyish-black cere
The subspecies vary considerably in colour, but all have the green wings with red head and body.
Distribution
South-east Asia: endemic to New Guinea.
Taxonomy
Subspecies[1]
There are has 9 subspecies:
- L. l. lory:
- Western Papuan islands and Vogelkop Peninsula (western New Guinea)
- L. l. cyanauchen:
- Biak Island (northern New Guinea)
- L. l. jobiensis:
- Yapen Island and Mios Num Island (northern New Guinea)
- L. l. viridicrissalis:
- Northern New Guinea (Humboldt Bay to Mamberamo River)
- L. l. salvadorii:
- North-eastern New Guinea (Aitape area to Astrolabe Bay)
- L. l. erythrothorax:
- Southern and eastern New Guinea (except for range of somu)
- L. l. somu:
- Papua New Guinea (Fly River to Purari River)
Two additional subspecies major and rubiensis are not accepted by all authorities[2]
Habitat
Primary and secondary rainforest, swampforest and forest edges in most lowland areas up to 1000m.
Behaviour
The diet includes pollen, nectar, flowers, fruit and insects.
