Identification
11 cm; Bill pink to pale bluish and legs brownish-pink in both sexes.
Male mostly black with yellow crest curling out over bill, and yellow on chin to throat. Nape is reddish brown to red, orange, or pink. Yellow in wings and tail only visible in flight.
Female greenish olive overall with hint of curl over the bill and hint of yellow on throat.
Distribution
South America: found inVenezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
Five subspecies are recognized1:
- M. c. bellus:
- Western slope of West Andes to western side of Central Andes of Colombia
- M. c. pax:
- Subtropical south-eastern Colombia (eastern Nariño) and eastern Ecuador
- M. c. coronulatus:
- West Andes of Colombia (south-western Cauca and Nariño) and w Ecuador
- M. c. chrysopterus:
- Central and Eastern Andes of Colombia and north-western Venezuela
- M. c. peruvianus:
- Subtropical northern Peru (northern Cajamarca and northern San Martín)
Habitat
Mid to high elevation humid forests and forest edges. Mostly seen at heights between 1000–2300 m asl but in western Ecuador may be found at lower elevation.
Behaviour
Display involves 1 to few males that land on a mossy fallen tree trunk and make a slow dance where the yellow crest is made very obvious.
Song
A frog like croak is given near display sites, but this is mostly a quiet species.
Diet
Their diet consists of insects caught during short flights, and berries.
