Identification

27-28cm. Thick yellow bill, mostly dark brown head and breast with whitish streaks. Bronzed yellow orbital skin, whitish cheeks to throat and streaks in upper mantle.
Juvenile similar to adults.

Distribution

Asia
India, south-western China, Java, Bali and south-eastern Asia

Taxonomy

Sometimes placed in the genus Megalaima.

Habitat

Deciduous forest, coastal scrub, plantations

Behaviour

Breeds Sept-May. Nests in excavated tree holes 3-12 m above the ground. Lays 2-4 white eggs.
Male territorial cry is very loud.
