Genus: Mionectes
Description
A genus of tyrant flycatchers from Central and South America.
Taxonomy
Mionectes is a genus in the family Tyrannidae. The species included here fall in two groups:
- "the green-and-yellow group" includes Streak-necked Flycatcher and Olive-striped Flycatcher and have for a long time been placed in Mionectes; both of these are Andean
- "the rufous group" includes Ochre-bellied Flycatcher, McConnell's Flycatcher, and Gray-hooded Flycatcher which all are lowland species; these species have in the past been placed in genus Pipromorpha
The division between the two groups have been dated using DNA methods to about 7 million years ago, which is as deep as several other divisions that are recognized as different genera, but SACC have felt that the phenotypic difference between the species groups in this case is not big enough.
