Identification
30·5–35·5 cm (12-14 in): A small motmot
- Light chestnut crown
Distribution
Central America: found in Guatemala and Mexico.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
Four subspecies are recognized:[1]
- M. m. vanrossemi - North-western Mexico (southern Sonora to adjacent Chihuahua and Sinaloa)
- M. m. mexicanus - North-central and central Mexico
- M. m. saturatus - South-west Mexico (Oaxaca and Chiapas)
- M. m. castaneiceps - Arid Guatemala (Zacapa Plains and Motagua Valley)
Habitat
Forest edges, dry woodlands and scrub. Occurs up to 1800 m.
Behaviour
Diet
Their diet consists mostly of large insects taken in flight, from the ground and gleaned from leaves. They also sometimes take small snakes.
