- Myadestes obscurus
Identification
Grey-brown above and lighter grey below, short, dark bill, dark eye, and dark legs. Juveniles have a spotted breast.
Distribution
Windward Hawaii, primarily Hilo and Ka'u districts. They are extirpated from forests in the Kona and Kohala districts, but recent small reintroduction efforts have taken place. There is a distinct alpine population living on the upper slopes of Mauna Loa.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
Native forests and alpine scrub forest.
Behaviour
Diet
Diet includes fruits from understory trees and shrubs, berries and invertebrates, mainly caterpillars and spiders.
Breeding
Females build the nest and incubate 1-2 eggs for about 16 days. Both sexes feed nestlings, and both adults provide parental care for more than three weeks after young birds leave the nest.
