Identification

The male has yellow legs and a yellow iris. The sides of the neck are black giving the hooded appearance while the lores are white. Remaining upperparts are blue-grey while underparts are white.

The female differs by having a blue-grey head and a pale buffy breast.

Distribution

South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina.
Fairly common in its large range but often locally distributed.

• Tropical Amazon basin of north-eastern Peru and adjacent western Brazil

• N. p. caerulea:

• Eastern Bolivia to Paraguay, eastern and southern Brazil and northern Argentina

Habitat

Humid evergreen and moist deciduous woodland, often along woodland borders and in the vicinity of water. In Amazonia mostly in varzea forest and in successional vegetation on river islands and along riverbanks.
Occurs in lowlands up to 1300m.

Behaviour

Feeds on insects, takes also fruit.
Often in pairs, families or groups of up to 6 birds. Forages in singly-species groups sometimes loosely associated with other species.
Breeds presumably in dry season. The nest is a thin open cup made of dry weeds, tendrils, dead leaves, grass and spider webs. It's placed 8 to 12m above the ground in a branch fork. Lays 2 eggs.
Resident in most of its range.
