Identification

12cm. A small forest warbler:

  • Pale yellowish supercilium and well marked dark eyestripe
  • Olive-green upperparts
  • Whitish-grey throats and underparts
  • Indistinct olive streaking on breast
  • Dark bill

Sexes similar, juveniles undescribed.

Distribution

Endemic to Madagascar.
Fairly common in most of its range.

Taxonomy

Three subspecies recognized:

  • N. s. sclateri in northeast Madagascar (sometimes merged with nominate)
  • N. s. striatigula in southeast Madagascar
  • N. s. pallidior in southwest Madagascar

Like all species of this genus this species was formerly placed in the family Timaliidae.

Habitat

Woodland and forest habitats including primary rainforest, mangroves or semi-arid scrub. From sea-level up to 1800m.

Behaviour

Feeds mainly on insects, gleaning them from foliage in the canopy.
Often seen in mixed flocks.
Breeding season during summer rains from November to January. The nest is a flimsy ball with a side-top entrance, made of grass, leaves and other vegetation. It's suspended from one or more twigs, 1 - 2m above the ground in a small bush. Lays 3 - 5 eggs.
Probably a resident species.
