Identification

9·5–11 cm (3¾-4¼ in)
Male

• Olive-grey crown
• Reddish-orange coronal patch (sometimes partially concealed)
• White supra-loral spot
• Broken white eye-ring
• Olive-grey nape

Distribution

South America: found in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.

Taxonomy

Formerly placed in genus Myiophobus.

Subspecies

There are 3 subspecies^[1]:

• N. p. pulcher:

• Western Andes of south-western Colombia and north-western Ecuador (south to Pichincha)

• N. p. bellus:

• Central and Eastern Andes of Colombia and north-eastern Ecuador

• N. p. oblitus:

• Andes of south-eastern Peru (Cuzco and northern Puno)

Habitat

Humid forests and forest borders. Various woodland types. Observed at heights around 2227 meters.

Behaviour

Diet

Their diet consists almost entirely of insects.
