Ornate Fruit Dove - BirdForum Opus

Identification

25cm

  • Dark purple hood
  • Pale grey throat and collar
  • Dark bronzy brown breast with golden colour on upper breast
  • Green upperparts, wings with dark purple patch on shoulder and silver-grey patch below
  • Golden green scapulars with pale grey centres creating spotted effect
  • Dark green tail with yellow terminal band
  • gestroi with mustard yellow hood

Sexes similar.

Similar species

Pink-spotted Fruit Dove has more extensive grey throat and collar, less extensive golden colour on upper breast, paler bronzy brown breast and pink spots on wings.

Distribution

Endemic to New Guinea.
Little known but common or even abundant in many places.

Taxonomy

Two subspecies recognized:

  • P. o. ornatus in northwestern New Guinea (Arfak Mountains and coastal Vogelkop)
  • P. o. gestroi in New Guinea (west to Cyclops Mountains and Onin Peninsula)

Habitat

Moist lowland forests and montanes.
Occurs mainly at 200-1350 m, but locally also lower or higher. Pink-spotted Fruit Dove is mostly found in forest-edge habitats in the lowlands.

Behaviour

Diet

Feeds on fruit, mainly figs. Forages often in flocks of 50 or more birds and associates with other species at fruiting trees.

Breeding

Nesting reported in October. One nest was placed in a dense tangel 3 m above the ground in a tree. Obviously a solitary nester.

Movements

Presumably a nomadic species.
