Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 5 subspecies^[1]:

• P. h. hattamensis:

• North-western New Guinea (Tamrau and Arfak mountains)

• P. h. ernesti:

• North-western New Guinea (Wandammen Mountains)

• P. h. axillaris:

• New Guinea (Weyland, Nassau and Snow mountains)

• P. h. insularis:

• Mountains of New Guinea

• P. h. lecroyae:

• Mountains of east-central New Guinea

Habitat

Forests, generally at heights around 760–1650 m, though locally higher.

Behaviour

Diet

Mostly a ground feeder in areas of ferns and tall herbiage. Their diet consisting mostly of insects.
