Distribution
Northern Australia, New Guinea, and several surrounding groups of islands including the Moluccas.
Taxonomy
Formerly lumped within Plain Bush-hen, (A. olivacea).
Subspecies
There are 4 subspecies1:
- A. m. moluccana:
- Sangihe Island, Moluccas, Misool Island, western and northern New Guinea
- A. m. nigrifrons:
- A. m. ultima:
- Eastern Solomon Islands
- A. m. ruficrissa:
- Southern and eastern New Guinea, and northern and eastern Australia

Moist lowland forests. Bush garden
