Identification

Distribution

Northern Australia, New Guinea, and several surrounding groups of islands including the Moluccas.

Taxonomy

Formerly lumped within Plain Bush-hen, (A. olivacea).

Subspecies

There are 4 subspecies1:

  • A. m. moluccana:
  • Sangihe Island, Moluccas, Misool Island, western and northern New Guinea
  • A. m. nigrifrons:
  • A. m. ultima:
  • Eastern Solomon Islands
  • A. m. ruficrissa:
  • Southern and eastern New Guinea, and northern and eastern Australia

Habitat

Moist lowland forests. Bush garden
