Identification
27–29 cm (10½-11½ in)
- Yellow base of bill
- Whitish throat patch
Similar Species
Similar to Plumbeous Rail, which has a red bill base and lacks the white throat patches.
Distribution
South America: found from Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru to Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
There are 2 subspecies[1]:
- P. n. caucae:
- Cauca Valley of Colombia
- P. n. nigricans:
Habitat
High elevation marshes and bogs. Observed at heights around 1,300 m.
Behaviour
Secretive.
Diet
There is no information, but it is presumed they eat insects and invertebrates.
Breeding
They construct a nest using aquatic grasses, on or near the ground in tall damp grass.
