Male 28–34 cm (11-13½ in), female 28–32 cm (11-12½ in).

  • Purplish or reddish-brown head
  • Blackish neck with white subterminal spots
  • White lower underparts, feathers edged with purple
  • Red eyering and legs
  • White tipped red bill

The female is dull dark brown

Distribution

Southern Mexico to Ecuador, southern Brazil, northern Argentina, and Trinidad.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

It has previously been placed in genus Columba.

Habitat

Humid evergreen and semi-deciduous forest. Forest edges and cleaarings.

Behaviour

Breeding

They build a stick, concave platform nest in a tree between 45-60cm above the ground. The clutch consists of two white eggs.

Diet

Their diet consists of small forest fruits taken from tall trees.
