Identification
7.2 to 7.5 cm.
- Short black straight bill
- Green upperparts
- White throat and centres of breast and belly, pale buff rest
- Roundish tail with green central rectrices broadly tipped black, buff rest of rectrices with broad black diagonal band
Sexes similar. Juveniles are similar to adults but have buff fringes on head and neck feathers.
Distribution
Endemic to the eastern slope of the Andes in southeast and central Peru.
Generally common in its small range.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Closely related to Ecuadorian Piedtail.
Habitat
Forest in Andean foothills. Occurs at 750 to 1500 m.
Also in secondary growth or in modified habitat as long as patches of forest remain.
Behaviour
Diet
Feeds on nectar of flowering shrubs, epiphytes and small trees. Clings to the corolla to feed on the nectar and also gleans small arthropods from leaf surfaces.

Movements
A sedentary species with some likely altitudinal dispersal.
