Identification
10cm (4 in). A distinctive tiny woodpecker.
- Dark plumage spotted with white
- Black top of head with white feather tips, male with broad red feather tips on crown
- Buff white lores often with white crescent above eye
- Dark brown cheeks and ear-coverts spotted white
- Dark brown rest of plumage with prominent black-based whitish tips
Juveniles are duller and more diffusely patterned, markings below tending towards bars
Distribution
Eastern Brazil.
Poorly known, probably uncommon or overlooked.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Habitat
Dry forests and dense shrub (caatinga). Occurs up to 750m.

Breeding
Breeding season possibly from November to February, possibly also in July. No other information.
Movements
Presumably a resident species.
