19 cm (7½ in)

  • Dull brown overall plumage
  • Crest often raised
  • Yellow iris

Distribution

Philippines.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 5 subspecies

  • P. u. ilokensis:
  • North Luzon (northern Philippines)
  • P. u. urostictus:
  • North Philippines (Luzon and Polillo); formerly Catanduanes
  • P. u. atricaudatus:
  • Philippines (Bohol, Samar, Panaon, Biliran and Leyte)
  • P. u. philippensis:
  • South Philippines (Dinagat, Siargao and Mindanao)
  • P. u. basilanicus:
  • South Philippines (Basilan and Zamboanga area of Mindanao)

Habitat

Forest edges, open woodland, second growth; occurs up to 1000m

Behaviour

Diet

There is not much known, they do forage on fruit, singly, in pairs or small groups.

Breeding

They construct a cup-shaped nest for their 3 eggs.
