Identification

40cm.

  • Backward-swept wings
  • Grey feet
  • Reddish-pink bills.

Male

  • Green, blue tinge to their napes
  • Yellow foreheads, cheeks and throats
  • Red breast band
  • Black underside and green upperside to the long, pointed tail
  • Orange-yellow irises

Female

  • Duller lacking the red and yellow coloration.
  • Greyish-green throat
  • Bluish-green face
  • Orange-yellow thighs and pink tipped under-tail feathers
  • Yellow irises

Distribution

New South Wales and Victoria in Australia.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species.

Habitat

Forests and grasslands near water.

Behaviour

They roost in the canopy during hot parts of the day and forage both in the canopy and on the ground at dawn and in the evening. The diet includes grain, seeds, berries, fruits, nuts, flower, and nectar.

They nest in hollows in tall trees. 4-6 eggs are laid and are incubated by the female for 20 days. They fledge from 35 to 45 days and are independent by 50 days.
