Identification
14 cm. Overall dark rusty-brown, spotted white below and on mantle, white supercilium and throat, white streaking on neck and nape. Protruding spines to tail.
Variation
Subspecies pariae has the white throat described and spots only reaching upper flanks, while tatei shows spots on an underside that is overall darker and does not produce a true white throat but has spots reaching lower flanks.
Similar Species
Compare with Spotted Barbtail (no overlap in range) and Stripe-breasted Spinetail.
Distribution
Taxonomy
Two subspecies are recognized[1]:
- P. t. tatei
- P. t. pariae
Has in the past been included with Spotted Barbtail but see reference[2]. It has been proposed that subspecies pariae should be a full species, Paria Barbtail.
Habitat
Moss contaning dense understory of wet forests in medium to high elevation, often with palms intermixed.
Behaviour
Fourages mostly alone or in small family flocks.
