- Green head and breast
- Blue tinge to forehead and lower cheeks
- Yellow belly
- White white undertail-coverts
- Red rump
Female duller
- Pale olive underparts
- Dull green wings and back
- Blue-black wing tips
- She lacks the red rump
Distribution
Endemic to Australia
Taxonomy
Subspecies
There are 2 subspecies[1]:
- P. h. caeruleus:
- South Australia (Lake Eyre region) and adjacent Queensland
- P. h. haematonotus:
- Scrub and riverine woodlands of interior south-eastern Australia
Habitat
Savanna grassland. Open woodland, mallee, riverine growth. Parks and gardens.
Behaviour
Diet
Their mainly vegetarian diet consists of seeds, grass and herbaceous plants.
Breeding
They nest in a tree hollow (usually in a eucalyptus) but may also utilise fence posts and tree stumps.
