30 cm; tail up to 18 cm
Male

  • Pink head
  • Back of crown nape and cheeks pale blue
  • Narrow black neck collar
  • Black chin stripe
  • Red shoulder patch
  • Blue-green rump and tail
  • Tail tipped yellow
  • Beak
    • Yellow upper mandible
    • Dark lower mandible

Female

  • Pale grey head
  • Pale lower mandible

Immature

  • Green head
  • Grey chin
  • Yellow mandibles
  • Lacks red shoulder patch.

Distribution

Asia: found in China, Nepal, India, Eastern and Western Himalayas, Bangladesh, Bhutan
Southeast Asia: Indochina, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand

Taxonomy

There are 2 subspecies:

  • P. r. juneae:

Habitat

Forest and open woodland.

Behaviour

Diet

The diet includes fruits and blossoms.

Breeding

It nests in holes in trees; 4-5 white eggs are laid.
