Identification

Formerly placed in genus Francolinus.

Three subspecies are recognized^[1].

P. s. squamatus
- central and southeastern Nigeria east to southwestern and northern Democratic Republic of the Congo
P. s. schuetti
- southern South Sudan and western Ethiopia south to eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, western and central Kenya and Tanzania, and central Malawi
P. s. maranensis
- southeastern Kenya and northeastern Tanzania
