Genus: Ptiloris
Description
The four Riflebirds belong to the Birds-of-paradise and are found in New Guinea and Australia.
The have fairly long, decurved bills. Male are mainly black with a blue/green crown and an iridescent breast-shield.
Females are smaller and brownish-greyish with underbarts with barring or chevrons.
All species are polygynous. The male advertises from a perch and performs a complex display (see picture). The female builds and attends the nest alone.
Taxonomy
Ptiloris is a genus in the family Paradisaeidae.
Growling Riflebird is sometimes considered a subspecies of Magnificent Riflebird.
