Pycnonotus aurigaster

Identification

  • Short crest
  • Black lores and face
  • Brown upperparts
  • White rump
  • White underparts

Juveniles similar but the head is browner and the vent is paler

Variations

Vent area varies from yellow, through orange to red, depending on the subspecies.

Distribution

Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Laos, Burma, Thailand, and Vietnam.

There are 9 subspecies[1]:

Habitat

Cultivated and grassy areas, scrub, second growth, forest clearings, woods, towns and gardens.

Behaviour

Diet

They forage in pairs during the breeding season. They are generalist and opportunistic feeders. There is no information on their actual diet, but is likely to be similar to Red-vented Bulbul, with fruit an nectar featuring.
