- Querula purpurata
Identification
28cm (11in) in male, a little smaller in female, and both smaller in eastern populations
- A mid black bird, glossy on upperside in male, more dull in female and immature
- Greyish bill that can look whitish, bluish-white or even silvery sometimes. Upper mandible has a black tip
Male has a dark red to purple throat with elongated, flattened feathers.
Distribution
Costa Rica to pacific coast of Colombia and Ecuador, and a separate population east of the Andes in Eastern Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru to Bolivia, and from there east through Brazil, the Guianas, to eastern Venezuela1,2.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
Humid forests mostly lower than 400 m, also in mature secondary forests.
Behaviour
Diet
Their diet consists of both insects and fruit. Insects, such as cicadas, katydids, moths and mantids are fed to their nestlings.
