Identification

38cm.

  • Glossy black plumage
  • Short red eyebrow crest
  • White tips to tail
  • Red to yellowish orange bare skin around eye
  • Pale green bill with orange base
  • cagayanensis has a shorter crest and a paler breast

Sexes similar. Juveniles are all black with a brown forehead. The red crest develops very quickly.

Distribution

Endemic to the Philippines where found on Luzon.
Fairly common in suitable habitat. However, the forest is heavily logged throughout the species' range.

Taxonomy

Two subspecies recognized:

  • P. s. cagayanensis in northeast Luzon
  • P. s. superciliosus west and south of cagayanensis

Placed in genus Dasylophus by Dickinson (2003) and Gill & Wright (2008), formerly placed in Phaenicophaeus

Habitat

Moist lowland forests.
Occurs from 100m to 800m.

Behaviour

Diet

Feeds on large insects. Takes also worms and lizards. Forages by creeping and hopping in tangles of vines, also drops to the ground to grab insects.

Breeding

Breeding season from May to June. The nest is undescribed.

Movements

A resident species.
