Identification
10-10.5 cm.
- Blue forehead and face
- Large red crescent on rearmost ear-coverts and side of neck
- Green rest of head to back and upperwing
- Red rump, uppertail-coverts and edge of brown tail
- Green chin, throat and underparts
- Black bill
Females are similar but have less red and less blue on head.
Juveniles are green above, have a reddish-brown rump, uppertail-coverts and tail, are dull green below, have a greenish-blue face and a yellow bill with a black upper ridge.
Distribution
Endemic to the mountains of Mindanao, in the southern Philippines.
Very local but moderately common in its small range. Easily overlooked due to its secretive habits.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
May form a superspecies with Blue-faced Parrotfinch and Tricolored Parrotfinch.
Habitat
Montane forest and grassy clearings.
Occurs from 1000 to 2250 m.
Behaviour
Diet
Feeds on seeds of grasses, thistles, chicory, opium poppy and flax. Takes also fruits and small insects.
Forages on the ground and in low vegetation, usually singly or in small groups.
Breeding
Few information. Birds with active gonads recorded in January to April. Lays 1 to 3 eggs in captivity.
Movements
This is a resident species.
