- Laniarius ruficeps
Identification
18–19 cm (7-7½ in)
Forecrown and eye-stripe dark grey, hindcrown and nape chestnut, supercilium white. Wings and tail dark grey with white wing-bar, back pale grey. Underparts white with buffy wash on flanks.
Distribution
East Africa: found in Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya
Taxonomy
Subspecies
Laniarius ruficeps has three subspecies:[1]
- L. r. rufinuchalis
- L. r. ruficeps
- Extreme north-western Somalia
- L. r. kismayensis
Habitat
Dry shrubland and thicket.
Behaviour
A "skulker", keeping low in bushes unless singing.
Diet
Their main diet consists of insects, but adults and larval. The forage on the ground.
Vocalization
A repeated creeo creeo (duet); also a scolding churr.
