Identification

60 cm. Grey head and neck, black stripes down the throat (less marked in females), through the eye, and on the sides of the neck, and white cheeks. The body is sandy brown above, and white below. The legs are sandy yellow-brown.

Distribution

Arid, coastal, southern Angola and western Namibia.

Taxonomy

Two subspecies are recognized:1

  • H. r. rueppellii - Arid coastal sw Angola (Benguela) to nw Namibia
  • H. r. fitzsimonsi - S Namibia (Maltahöhe to Windhoek)

Habitat

Semi-desert.

Behaviour

Usually seen singly, in pairs, or in small groups. Forage while walking, for invertebrates, seeds and leaves.

Breeding

Monogamous; probably group-territorial. The nest is a shallow scrape in stony ground. One to three eggs are laid year-round, peaking in April-May.
