Formicarius colma

Identification

  • Brown upperparts
  • Black head, throat and breast
  • Dark grey underparts

Distribution

South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 4 subspecies:

  • F. c. colma:
  • F. c. nigrifrons:
  • F. c. amazonicus:
  • Brazil south of River Amazon (River Madeira to north-western Maranhão, southern Mato Grosso)
  • F. c. ruficeps:
  • Coastal eastern and south-eastern Brazil (Pernambuco to Rio Grande do Sul)

Habitat

Rain forests.

Behaviour

Diet

They forage amongst the leaf litter for ants and grasshoppers.
