Identification

15·5–18 cm (6-7 in)

  • Rufous patch on nape (a distinctive ID feature)
  • Pale bluish-grey upperparts
  • Dark brown wings and tail
  • Pale grey or white underparts
  • Long bill with a downward tip

Distribution

South America: found from Peru through Bolivia and western Argentina to Chile.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 2 subspecies[1]:

  • M. r. occipitalis:
  • Andes of Peru and northern Bolivia (La Paz and Cochabamba)
  • M. r. pallidiceps:
  • M. r. rufivertex:
  • Andes of southern Chile and southern Argentina; winters north to Antofagasta

Habitat

High-altitude shrubland and grassland and pastures, generally near rocky slopes, ravines and cliffs.

Behaviour

Diet

They forage on the ground for insects.
