Scytalopus parkeri

Identification

  • Slaty grey over most of the body, slightly paler below
  • Somewhat brownish at rump
  • Rufous-brown with not very strong blackish, wavy, barring on lower flanks and vent area

Similar species

Spillmann's Tapaculo is visually very similar but differs in voice, and is found north of the range of this species

Distribution

South America: found in the Andes of south-eastern Ecuador to extreme northern Peru (eastern Piura, northern Cajamarca).

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

It prefers Chusquea bamboo and surrounding dense undergrowth in humid forest at 2200-3350 m asl.

Behaviour

Like most Tapaculos, this species is much more readily heard than seen, as it prefers Chusquea bamboo and surrounding dense undergrowth where it feeds on or near the ground.
