Identification

14–15 cm (5½-6 in)

  • Slate grey crown and head sides
  • Bright yellow supercilium
  • Yellow spot below eye
  • Olive-green upperparts
  • Yellow underparts
  • Olive-green flanks and sides
  • Green eyes
  • Pink legs
  • Bill
  • Black upper mandible
  • Grey lower mandible

Distribution

South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 4 subspecies[1]:

  • V. l. mikettae:
  • V. l. leucotis:
  • South-eastern Colombia to eastern Ecuador, northern Peru, the Guianas and north-western Brazil
  • V. l. simplex:
  • Brazil (south of the Amazon) to southern Peru (Huánuco to northern Cuzco)
  • V. l. bolivianus:
  • South-eastern Peru (Cuzco) to northern Bolivia

Habitat

Wet forest and forest borders in foothills and lower highlands. Usually seen in the canopy.

Behaviour

Diet

Their diet consists mostly of arthropods, especially items such as grasshoppers.
