Identification

10 cm (4 in)
Breeding Male

  • Greyish crown to mantle and upper back
  • Tawny-orange lower face sides, breast and belly
  • Tawny-rufous rump

Distribution

South America: found from Bolivia to Paraguay, southern Brazil and northern Argentina

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Moist grasslands with tall grasses; grassy hillsides. Also patches of grass beside roads.

Behaviour

Diet

Their main diet consists of grass seeds, which they forage for in small groups or mixed flocks, while clinging to the stems.
