Juvenile has much weaker markings than the adult
Distribution
Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica.
Taxonomy
Six subspecies are recognized[1]:
- P. m. microstictus
- NE Mexico (e Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí and Tamaulipas)
- P. m. maculipectus
- Gulf-Caribbean slope of e Mexico (Veracruz to n Oaxaca)
- P. m. umbrinus
- S Mexico (Tabasco and Chiapas) and s Belize
- P. m. varians
- S Mexico (Pacific slope of Chiapas), Guatemala and El Salvador
- P. m. canobrunneus
- SE Mexico (Yucatán Pen. to Petén of Guatemala and n Belize
- P. m. petersi
- N Honduras to n Costa Rica
Was formerly placed in genus Thryothorus with all other species of the genus Pheugopedius.
Habitat
Forests, second growth, and edges, often low in vegetation. Has a preference for humid areas, avoids high mountains.

Vocalizations
Will often sing duets (below recording is a single bird).
