There are 5 subspecies[1]:

  • X. e. erythropygius:
Highlands of southern Mexico (San Luis Potosí to Oaxaca and Guerrero)
  • X. e. parvus:
  • Highlands of southern Mexico (se Oaxaca, Chiapas) to north-central Nicaragua
  • X. e. punctigula:
  • Tropical south-eastern Nicaragua to central Panama (Veraguas)
  • X. e. insolitus:
  • Central and eastern Panama to north-western Colombia (Atrato and Truando rivers)
  • X. e. aequatorialis:

Habitat

Lowland and montane humid forests, mostly evergreen.

Behaviour

Diet

Little known, but thought to consist of arthropods and invertebrates.
