Identification

20cm

  • Orange head and neck
  • Black nape patch
  • White throat
  • Black upper mantle
  • Olive green back
  • Greenish-blue upperwing with dark olive-black flight feathers

  • Orangey-yellow bill in adults, dark grey in juveniles

Adult females have black crown patch

Distribution

New Guinea and Australia.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

  • S. t. torotoro:
  • Lowlands of New Guinea, western Papuan Islands, Yapen Islad and Aru Island
  • S. t. flavirostris:
  • Cape York Peninsula of north-eastern Australia (south to Weipa and Massy Creek)
  • S. t. ochracea:
  • D'Entrecasteaux Archipelago

Habitat

Rainforest, monsoon, mangrove and gallery forests and forest edges.

Behaviour

Diet

The diet includes large insects, which includes beetles, grasshoppers, butterflies and dragonflies. Also earthworms and lizards.

Breeding

They nest in an excavated chamber in a termite nest. The clutch consists of 3-4 white eggs.
