Identification
8–11 cm (3-4¼ in)
Male
- Bright violet cap and bib
- Brilliant green underparts
Female: green cap and back, sides green flecked with gold, dirty white underparts, pale tip to the tail.
Distribution
South America: found from south-eastern Brazil to eastern Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
Moist lowland forests and montanes; forest edges and suburban areas.
Behaviour
Diet
The diet consists mostly of nectar taken from a variety of flowers at varying heights. In addition, small insects are occasionally taken.
Breeding
"In nuptial displays male makes semicircular flights around perched female while displaying iridescent crown and breast." [3].
They breed from September to February and build a bowl-shaped nest.
