Identification
13-14 cm (5-5½ in)
Male
- Grey plumage, crown sometimes blackish
- Brownish-black wings and tail, wing-coverts dotted white, tail tips spotted white
- Posterior underparts faintly to obviously barred, crissum feathers tipped white
Female
- Dark rufous crown
- White-spotted dark grey ear-coverts
- Dark olive-brown upperparts and wings
- Blackish-brown tail, outer rectrices tipped white
- Olive-brown underparts, tinged clay colour
- Pale buff throat and centre of belly
Juveniles resemble females, but with buff wing-covert spots and tail tips.
Distribution
Lower slopes of the Andes of extreme southeast Peru and northwest Bolivia.
A restricted-range species.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
Moist montanes and adjacent second growth. Usually in dense thickets with bamboo.
Occurs from 600 to 1700 m.
Behaviour
Diet
Not well known. Feeds mainly on insects.
Forages singly or in pairs at 1.5 to 3 m above the ground, rarely higher up, usually in very dense vine tangles and large-leaved bushes. Rarely joins mixed-species flocks.
Breeding
No information.
Movements
Presumably a resident species.
