66–76 cm (26-30 in)
Very long bill

  • Chestnut head, chest and neck with a white stripe down the front
  • Slate flanks and underwings
  • Ochre-tinged grey abdomen
  • Black upperparts covered with fine white barring

Immature: broad black barring on a browny-buff base

Distribution

Central and South America:
Central America: Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama
South America: Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina

Two subspecies are recognized[1]:

  • T. l. lineatum:
  • T. l. marmoratum:
  • Central Bolivia to eastern Brazil and north-eastern Argentina

Habitat

Undergrowth on river banks and swamps.

Behaviour

Diet

Their diet consists of fish, amphibians, grasshoppers, snakes, crustaceans etc.
