Identification
80cm
- Bare greeny-yellow to orange throat
- Distinct Black crown
- Light grey sides of head
- Sides of neck and upperparts buff with black narrow bars
- Black border to white median stripe down the foreneck
- Rest of underparts dull cinnamon brown.
Juvenile is buff, barred with black, more mottled and vermiculated on wings; the throat, median underparts and belly are whitish.
Similar Species
The Fasciated Tiger Heron is darker and smaller, has shorter bill, and lacks the distinct black cap of the Bare-throated.

Central and South America
Central America: Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama
South America: Colombia
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
Coastal mangrove swamps, brackish lagoons, riparian edges, wetlands, marshes, estuaries and rocky coasts.
Behaviour
Diet
The diet includes fish, frogs or crabs.
Breeding
A solitary breeder, it builds a small flattish stick platform nest in a tree. The clutch consists of 2-3 green-tinged white eggs.
