South America: Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil
Taxonomy
Subspecies
There are 10 subspecies[1]:
- T. c. puella: Tropical and subtropical central Mexico to western Panama
- T. c. underwoodi: Humid montane forests of nw Costa Rica
- T. c. aurantiiventris: highlands of central and southern Costa Rica to western Panama
- T. c. extimus: Subtropical eastern Panama
- T. c. heothinus: Eastern Panama (Darién)
- T. c. virginalis: Western Colombia to western Ecuador (El Oro)
- T. c. subtropicalis: Central Colombia
- T. c. exoptatus: Northern Colombia, northern Venezuela, Trinidad and Tobago
- T. c. collaris: Eastern Colombia to Bolivia, Venezuela and the Guianas
- T. c. castaneus: central South America south of the Amazon, from Peru and Bolivia east to Pará; and eastern Brazil from Bahia to Rio de Janeiro
The subspecies underwoodi and aurantiiventris were until recently considered a separate species: Orange-bellied Trogon (Trogon aurantiiventris)
Habitat
Edge of humid forest and in woodland. In both primary and secondary growth.
Behaviour
Breeding
It nests in a hole in a termite nest or tree. The clutch consists of 2 white eggs.
Diet
The diet includes insects and fruit.
Vocalisation
Call: caow, caow, caow.
